Launched in 2016, Cardiff University Medical Imaging Society (or simply CUMIS for short!) was established by a group of students with a vested interest in all facets of medical imaging and radiology as a career speciality.
The society has enjoyed a successful introductory year, and provided students at all stages of medical school with tricks and tips on image interpretation, research opportunities and career advice.
Based at Heath Park Campus site, University Hospital Wales, we have been fortunate to establish links and collaborate with a growing team of junior doctors and consultants across numerous Welsh Health Boards, with a passion to teach and inspire interest in the subspecialties of Radiology, and hope to maintain and nurture these relationships in the future.
With regards to education, we have hosted a number of popular ‘Imaging Interpretation Series’, focusing on a particular imaging modality. Over a number of weeks, core anatomical and pathological concepts are introduced by foundation and radiological core trainee doctors, before practising a systematic approach in student-led small group sessions. Large lecture-based revision sessions have also been very well-attended, identifying that students desire more opportunities to pursue radiology teaching! Career and research/audit evenings hosted by consultant and speciality doctors have also garnered a significant degree of interest from students contemplating a career in radiology.
Alongside this, we have also recognised that radiology is involved throughout the majority of medical specialities. To this end, we have collaborated with related societies and medical departments in hosting charity and teaching events, addressing topics including the implications of radiation, and the use of radiology in oncology and related treatment strategies.
CUMIS is excited at the prospect of working with the RCR as part of the URSA to grow further and provide new opportunities to our members. As a rapidly advancing field involving ever-evolving imaging and interventional techniques, we look forward to collaborative and learning opportunities with those in similar organisations.
ALEX HACKNEY
PRESIDENT
Alex is a postgraduate medical student about to begin the fourth year of his degree. He was drawn to the diagnostic aspects of Radiology, and has a keen interest in GI imaging, currently being involved in clinical research projects evaluating the routine use of ultrasound guidance for liver biopsy at UHW.
He hopes to provide similar clinical and scientific research opportunities through CUMIS as one of his aims as President over the next year.
Alex is a self-confessed Japanophile and can often be found chowing down on a hearty bowl of ramen at his local noodle bar. 私は日本が好きから、いつか留学したいです。その時前けど、ラメンに山ほど食べます!
ANNABELLE HOOK
VICE PRESIDENT
Hello! I am the current VP for CUMIS and my role is to help the President keep the society running as smoothly and as brilliantly as it can be!
Since being part of CUMIS I have thoroughly enjoyed fundraising, teaching as well as generally learning a lot more anatomy and I have really noticed it has helped me on placements when it comes to looking at imaging.
My main interests within Medicine are currently Psychiatry and Surgery; however, Radiology falls across many specialities and so, it is fundamental to have a good basic grasp on imaging, and this is the easiest stage to begin!
AMY PRIDEAUX
SECRETARY
Radiology is a topic and specialty which is largely unknown, particularly in the earlier years of medical school. It is however, common to every specialty which is why I think it’s so important to have a solid understanding! With technology advancing all the time, Radiology is on the rise and I can’t wait to see its progression in the future!
I started getting involved with the small group teaching sessions that CUMIS held last year and have really enjoyed being part of the society as well as developing my own leadership and teaching skills.
Outside of Medicine I enjoy running and have recently started aerial sports and circus skills!
SAM GUBB
TREASURER
Having been involved since the beginnings of the society, I am excited to contribute towards our range of insightful events in the coming year. With limited radiological teaching throughout Medicine at university, the sessions have really helped improve my understanding. I'm looking forward to applying my new skills in placements soon.
Without a clear goal of a future speciality, I am confident Radiology will be applicable to many areas of Medicine. I am excited to learn about technological advances and their uses, helping to improve the standard of healthcare.
Outside of Medicine I enjoy football and music; I hope to continue playing for Cardiff Medics FC!
WILEM FIELDS-JEWELL
4TH YEAR REPRESENATIVE
Wil is a postgraduate 4th year medical student with an interested in Cardiology, Diagnostic Radiology and Sports and Exercise Medicine.
Having been a member and enthusiastic teacher over the last years, he aims to promote CUMIS events and be a port of call for teaching topics for his fellow students in this vital year!
His interests include representing Cardiff University in Athletics and Football along with competing in various obstacle course races across the UK. If he is not doing that in his spare time, he will most likely be solving rubik's cubes instead!
ALICE GATENBY
3RD YEAR REPRESENATIVE
This is my first year being involved with CUMIS and I am very excited to be part of such a great society!
Radiology is essential in Medicine and it covers a wide range of specialties and as medical students it is essential we are able to understand the basics of imaging.
I am looking forward to teaching in some of the group sessions and to promote CUMIS to my fellow students in year 3.
My main interests within Medicine are currently Sexual Health, Gynaecology and General Practice. Outside of Medicine I enjoy baking and dabbling with a paint brush or two!

ZELEI (YOUNG) YANG
RADIOLOGY ST1 UHW, DOCTOR LEAD
A UCL graduate, keen to get involved in Radiology and teaching; a new society, a chance encounter with Alex H. and the rest is history. We set up a teaching series with a more hands-on approach, so that we can help build confidence in preparation for foundation training.
Currently doing ST1 in Radiology in South Wales, hoping to improve in GI radiology.
Also, currently setting up elective links for Cardiff students in Japan.
KEVIN PHILIPS
